Come home to Fairyland

Faërie contains many things besides elves and fays, and besides dwarfs, witches, trolls, giants, or dragons; it holds the seas, the sun, the moon, the sky; and the earth, and all things that are in it: tree and bird, water and stone, wine and bread, and ourselves, mortal men, when we are enchanted.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, “Tolkien on Fairy-stories”

Never underestimate the power of enchantment.  I don’t care of magic is real or completely made-up; that’s not the point.  Never underestimate what happens when you have two-thousand likeminded human beings in one space, determined to create a place where normal social rules warp and bend, and the pain and strife of the outside world are silly things compared to the power of ideas, camaraderie, and good whiskey.

Our Fairyland belongs, not to Tolkien or Pratchett or Gaiman or Disney.  It doesn’t even belong to us.  It belongs to everyone who takes part – our staff, who help make it happen; our performers, who help make it glorious; our vendors, who help make it full of artful creation; our attendees, who are the lifeblood of what we do.

This is the first time we’ve done something truly new since we invented The Steampunk World’s Fair.  It’s a risk, it’s a new thing, and we should be afraid.  We’re not.  You’ve shown us all the love we could possibly ask for, and people are already creating marvels to bring to this event.  We’ll repay you with every scrap of imagination and knowledge we can bring to bear in giving you an unforgettably phantasmagorical weekend.

The outside world is a strange place that is not of our making, and on Monday, we’ll get back to trying to make it a better place.  But let us spend a weekend taking your mind out of its various shells and walls and traps, and filling you up with Joy.

Times are more than difficult right now.  But we are not escapism.  We work hard to provide you a place where you can be yourself to the very absolute hilt, and then come home and tackle everything ahead of you with renewed energy.

“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.”
Terry Pratchett, “A Hat Full Of Sky”

Glimmerdark: We’re completely ridiculous because you deserve some time off from Ordinary Reality, and some time inside a Reality that you choose.

Also:

Want to help us in our quest to make the event even more magical?  We’d like to add some particularly lovely atmospheric effects, but we need your help to do it.  Please feel free to contribute – or share!  Either of those things helps a lot!
