Best-selling author of dark fantasy worlds for adults and teens
Melissa Marr grew up believing in faeries, ghosts and various other creatures. After teaching college literature for a decade, she applied her fascination with folklore to writing.
Her first novel, the New York Times bestseller Wicked Lovely, was published in 2007. Others in the Young Adult dark fantasy series followed: Ink Exchange, Fragile Eternity, Radiant Shadows, Darkest Mercy, Stopping Time and Old Habits. Her latest YA urban fantasy novel, Seven Black Diamonds, published on March 1st, 2016.
Her Faery Tales & Nightmares is a collection of stories for young people. A manga series also is set in Marr’s Wicked Lovely fantasy world. Marr’s first book for adult readers was Graveminder, a quirky dark fantasy about fate, free will and zombies.
Marr collaborated with fellow young adult author Kelley Armstrong on a children’s fantasy-adventure trilogy, The Blackwell Pages, which includes Loki’s Wolves, Odin’s Ravens, and Thor’s Serpents.
I enjoy art in all its guises—graffiti, surrealist paintings, classic sculptures, tattoos, interesting buildings, Renoir, photography… Art and nature, they feed my soul and thus my muse.
For fans who want to read more about faery lore, she recommends Welsh and Celtic folklore, The Lion and the Unicorn and Marvels and Tales as a starting point.
Today, Marr lives in Virginia with her family and too many dogs, writes full-time, and still believes in faeries and ghosts.
